Swain, PhD

This book covers a myriad of issues that are affecting the future of the United States. While I am diametrically opposed to any semblance of Christendom in America (or any other country, by the way), she does have some valid arguments. I find her discussion regarding the religious roots of America compelling. While many people talk of America being a Christian nation, I would disagree. There have been (and continues to be) serious reasons for having this opinion. The first would be our being a country of slavery during our fight for independence from England. It seems quite hypocritical for that fledgling group to be fighting for their freedom, while many were holding and owning slaves. In reality, this fact has had something of an influence on the country throughout its history, including today. This idea is addressed in this book by the chapters that refer to interracial relationships and the reduction or elimination of racism in our society.

I found the book, at times, to be difficult to read. There seemed to be a little more repetitiveness than what was needed, but this did not hamper the overall story at all.

I felt this was a good book to help illuminate the real and perceived issues in the United States. I would recommend it, despite my listed reservations, to anyone who has an interest in seeing a viewpoint of our issues as a country from someone who lived them and has lifted themselves above their circumstances.

Sabbath - Dan B. Allender

I selected this book to read in the hopes that it would provide a means of understanding the biblical foundations for the Sabbath. I have always had an interest on what guidelines the Israelites were under for the day of rest. I have also had a growing feeling that I should begin practicing a day of Sabbath in my life to provide the rest my body and soul needs for continued existence.

I have to say that I was disappointed, given my hopes for the book as previously outlined. I got the distinct feeling that the author of this book, Dan Allender, interprets the Sabbath as a day of feasting, playing, and pretending. He talks at length about preparing wonderful meals to enjoy along with wine and other beverages, as well as playing. The pretending aspect was brought into the discussion as a means of starting the week off right by acting as if things were just fine, no issues to consider.

I find several times in Exodus commentary regarding the Sabbath as a day of rest. It does not sound like to me that feasting is part of the Sabbath. Perhaps I do not know all the iterations of the translation of the Hebrew word used here for rest, but I have to say that this book cuts across the grain with respect to the historical understanding of the Sabbath and rest.

I would not recommend this book due to my disappointment. I feel as if it does not do the understanding of Sabbath justice. Another consideration for me regarding a lack of recommendation is the language used as well as some references to sexual activities within the context of Sabbath. The language aspect left the distinct feeling that some words were used to impress rather than explain. Regarding the sexual references, it was unnecessary and added absolutely nothing to the overall story.

Overall, this book was very disappointing.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://speedmusings.blogspot.com/2011/07/sabbath-dan-b-allender.html' title='Sabbath - Dan B. I personally agree with him on this matter. Without being too preachy, the author calmly describes the relationship between the Jews and their Arab brothers and neighbors, and accurately describes the relationship's beginning. This is accomplished by using scripture out of the Old Testament in the Bible. Keep in mind that the Old Testament is essentially the Hebrew Bible.

For a person that is professing to be a Christian, you should read this book. Even if you feel you know the basis of the relationship, read this book. It provides a step-by-step description of the beginnings and how man, outside of the divine leadership of God, really messes things up. It also gives insight into God displaying grace to human decisions that occur outside of His will.

Since this book strictly uses the Bible as proof, some may say that it is not accurate. However, if one delves into the myriad of research that has been and is being done regarding the Ancient Near East, and relates that to the Bible, one can see that the Bible is a very accurate historical book.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It reads easy and fast. It also gives opportunity to dive into the scriptures and read for oneself the histories and facts outlined therein.

William F. Buckley by Jeremy Lott

At first, I felt that this book would quite do justice to William Buckley. However, once I started reading, I was pleasantly surprised by the writing style, and the accuracy of the topic by the author. What a pleasant, easy-reading book!

The author relates, in a well-rounded manner, the life of William Buckley, as well as his activities as a conservative thinker. There are stories within this little book that enlighten one to the substantial contribution that William Buckley had towards the conservative movement in the United States. It also is very truthful about areas within which William fell short, or perhaps stumbled a bit verbally for various topics.

I was especially surprised by some of the early life antics of William as he grew up and attended college at Yale. It was very interesting to find out where perhaps some of his understanding and direction came from: his father. I was completely unaware of his father's activities south of the United States' borders.

Overall, this is a pleasant book to read, and, as mentioned, enlightens the reader to the life and times of William Buckley. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone: Conservative or Liberal. There is learning to be had regardless of political affiliation or stance.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://speedmusings.blogspot.com/2010/09/william-f-buckley-by-jeremy-lott.html' title='William F. Hundley, Ph.D.

With all the interest swirling around these days with respect to the end of the world as we know it, it seems that this book is relevant. There are many avenues to the realization that the end is near, from the Mayan calendar to religious predictions, and everything in between. The book describes 10 of the most popular, giving each space enough to explain their footing, followed by a realistic conclusion.
I found the book to be relevant from my perspective as a Christian. It seems that quite a bit of relevance has been placed on things like the Mayan calendar, which is supposed to end on December 21, 2012. Two sides are discussed in the book, one being the end of the calendar is doom inspiring, while the other merely says it is a significant change in humanity.
Scientific aspects are divulged regarding planetary alignment with the galaxy, huge solar flares, and the effect on the Earth. This effect could be anything from huge earthquakes, giant tsunami’s, and major volcanic reactions (the biggest example being Yellowstone).
Personally, I find this growing discussion over the end of the world fascinating, but perhaps not from the angle calculated by those who may read this: It just makes for good reading. I have no fear for tomorrow, or 2012. If the end comes, so be it. If it does not, so be it. I will continue to live on the Earth, or live with Jesus and God in Heaven. I cannot lose!
I would say this book is a good read for someone looking for a central explanation of the differing theories being presented regarding the end of the world in 2012 (or in general). It reads easy and quickly (I read it in 2 hours). It will be money well spent!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://speedmusings.blogspot.com/2010/05/will-world-end-in-2012-raymond-c.html' title='Will the World End in 2012? – Raymond C. Miller

We have always heard about the role of Paul Revere at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, but we probably have not heard his complete story. This book recounts that history to a very rich and full extent.
In this book, we get a glimpse of his past, including the arrival of his father from France. I had no idea that Paul's father was French. This book outlines Paul's history, from cradle to grave, and is replete with information regarding his active role within the Patriotic movement, most of which I am certain has not been taught previously.
Another aspect of this book that I found enlightening was another perspective of the oppressive tactics used by the English monarchy during this period, and the ways they justified their actions. Aspects of the various taxes and levies placed upon the American colony are illumined with new light, and from a new perspective.
I was so captivated by this book, only the need for sleep would prompt me to put it down. This book is written very well, and is quite easily read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a biography about what can now be understood as a man whose role was larger than realized, especially with respect to the Patriotic movement in Boston, MA.
I believe anyone who reads this book will be pleased!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://speedmusings.blogspot.com/2010/04/revolutionary-paul-revere-joel-j-miller.html' title='The Revolutionary Paul Revere - Joel J.
This is a good follow-on to the previous two historical references by William J. Bennett, America: The Last Best Hope, volumes 1 and 2. I only say good because I feel we are still too close to the things outlined in this book, historically speaking. However, the topics are quite relevant and still fresh in my personal memory. It was a great refresher to fill in the fuzzy areas. Regardless of what Michael states as a disclaimer in the book (based on his notes and recollections), I find them to be quite accurate and very enlightening. He has perspective I did not consider, both at the time of occurrence and now.

I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a fair look at the happenings of the 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s (up to 2008). I particularly enjoyed the recitation of George H.W. Bush’s and Bill Clinton’s presidencies. The 2000’s is a little weak, again because we are just too close to that period historically.

Overall a wonderful book that is well prepared, and very easy to read. Just like his previous two volumes, this one reads more like a story (and an amazing one at that!) and is somewhat hard to put down. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a relatively unbiased review of these eras.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://speedmusings.blogspot.com/2010/03/century-turns-by-william-j-bennett.html' title='A Century Turns – by William J. Colorado's Governor Ritter and the state legislation can't seem to get it right. I don't know if you've noticed, but I've removed my Amazon.com sticker from my sidebar. Why, you ask? Because our illustrious and inept leadership in this state (NOT elected by me!) enacted HB 10-1193, Coloradans are no longer eligible to do business with Amazon.com. The "business" I'm referring to is what Amazon calls the "Amazon Associates Program," whereby people can reference their website and receive funds back if purchases are made. So, an "unintended" consequence to this legislation is that revenue streams are removed for many citizens of Colorado.

Thank you Governor Ritter and a Colorado Democrat Congress! Perhaps consideration of the long term effect would be smart. With this and the equally inept energy bill, Governor Ritter and the state congress is responsible for reducing jobs and income streams for the state.

Way to go! November can't com soon enough.

Rediscovering God in America - Newt Gingrich

This book gives a wonderful walking tour of the major monuments within the Washington DC area as well as a description of the building of the monument in question and the purpose behind it. But the most important function that this book performs is the fact that it relates the Christian motivation behind these monuments, and the men they commemorate.
While this book did not deepen my faith, it did in fact reinforce my understanding of the foundation of the United States upon God. The fact that this book outlines the many monuments that have deep religious ties to the creation and furtherance of this great country is paramount. While there is a movement in the United States to eradicate all vestiges of the Godly references in all federal and state buildings and other properties, one has to wonder the lengths to which the American populace will allow this movement to progress. Will they be successful in defacing the majority of the monuments and have no outcry of public opposition?
My personal hope and prayer is that the reality of the defacing of the country will be realized by the majority of Americans and it will be put to an end. This book can go a long ways to waking up Americans to the absolute bedrock foundation this country has with God.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in (re)discovering the foundational aspects of the United States!

My Strength

A little note on this. I was sitting in class on December 10th(prior to its beginning), and I was thinking and discussing my final paper for my Biblical Analysis class. Part of the assignment is the actual analysis paper, but there's a 2nd, creative, portion. I'm an engineer; the most creative thing that I call elegant is how to adequately prioritize data packets as they traverse the network. But, as I began to reread the portion of Scripture that I was doing my analysis on, I had a desire to write some text down. What follows is the text, and it is what I will be turning in as my creative portion of my final paper.

"As I move along on my journey, I ponder where my strength is coming from. Certainly, my body is my transport mechanism and the trail or road provides the path from my feet, but where does my strength come from?

I scan the terrain around me, seeing flowered plains and snow capped mountains, and the ponds, streams, and lakes that dot the landscape, but where does my strength come from, because it certainly doesn't come from my physical surroundings.

Then, in the middle of my viewing the things of power and beauty around me, I am suddenly struck by a realization! All of my strength comes from my Lord, the creator of all the strength and beauty around me! My Lord, who created even me, is my strength!

My Lord is so mindful of me that he provides me the sure footing required to stay on this path even when it is immensely treacherous. My Lord watches over me at all times and is always watching for my safety. It is as if He never sleeps!

When my trails lead me into areas that are very hot and no shade is available, He provides me shade and comfort. My Lord will protect me from the heat of the day and the cold of the night. When evening comes, and temperatures drop to frigid levels, He provides me the warmth to survive.

There are times in my travels where I come upon populated areas that are filled with very dangerous and hateful people. But, I need not worry for my life as my Lord is there to protect me as well! He keeps me safe in these environs and prepares for me tables of plenty even when my enemies are present. My Lord seals my safety in his arms!

Just as the Lord guides me, protects me, and gives me strength, He will do the same for you! He will keep your footing sure; He will keep the sun from causing injury; He will keep you warm; He will protect you from your enemies, from now to forever!!"

My passage is Psalms 121
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=psalms%20121&version=ESV

Fearless - Max Lucado

Fearless is yet another wonderful book by Max Lucado. And, as the title implies, it has to do with being fearless. It is essentially like most other Max Lucado books in that it is very uplifting, and provides a myriad of relevant examples to make his point. It reads rather quickly, again just like other Max Lucado books.

This book is full of insight into the Christian experience as it relates to fear and how Christians should absolve themselves of it. By giving examples from the disciples’ experience with Jesus during his can be very helpful! Here you have men that are right there with Jesus exhibiting fear! The book goes a long way towards comforting the reader with respect to fear. It touches on the fear-inducing topics of the day. Things like global warming, war, and financial issues. It also touches on topics such as disappointments towards God from us, as well as others.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If you like to read Max Lucado books, you will absolutely not be disappointed. You will enjoy this one, too! If you have not read any Max Lucado books, this is a good one to start with.

The Sacred Meal - Nora Gallagher

This book was not what I expected it to be. When I received this book, I thought it would perhaps be a book about the process of taking communion, whether it be of my faith or others. I was actually very excited to read the book so that I may further understand the process of communion within another faith should it cover another faith.

Instead, this book is regarding communion as a metaphor for life, both past and present. The author speaks about her life experiences and relates that to taking communion, and how perhaps that process was played out in times of old.

While the book was not what I expected, there were portions that were great to read. However, I felt as if some aspects of her political views bled in to a few of the chapters, which I found to be slightly off topic. It was not enough to make me put the book down, but it was a "bump in the road," as it were.

Overall, if you are looking for an interesting book that will couple lifes (mis)adventures with the practice of communion (regardless of your faith), this is the book for you. It is a fairly quick read, and flows nicely. However, if you are looking for a book regarding the actual practice of communion and the liturgy along with it, this really is not the book for you. I would recommend it for folks of the former statement, but not the latter.

Green - Ted Dekker

I have to say that I felt it would be difficult for Ted Dekker to top the previous three books in this series (Black, Red, White), but Ted has done it! This is a wonderful and very engaging book. While it was longer than the others in the series, it didn't seem that way. Ted keeps the reader engaged throughout the story, without repetition or rambling at all.

The story line picks up where White left off. While this is numbered book zero, which it is in a twisted sort of way (you will have to read the book to understand), it ties up many loose ends. I especially enjoy how Ted has carried the relationships from the previous novels into this one, with the appropriate aging (of course).

As is usual with books written by Ted, he is descriptive to the point of getting the visual locked into the readers' mind without going overboard. The plot is smoothly spread throughout the story, with a sprint at the finish! The presentation of good versus evil is completely understandable and wonderfully presented.

I would highly recommend this book, as well as the previous three in the series, and any other Ted Dekker novel! They are all very well written, and convey the story in a wonderful manner!

The Blue Parakeet by Scot McKnight

Folks...

I'm fairly certain that not a lot of folks read my blog. That scripture is Ephesians 5:33:

However, each one of you must also love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. (NIV)

You can see the correlation between the book title and this verse.

I happen to agree with the author, and it took this book to get me to focus on the correct reading of this scripture. The author brings to the fore the scriptures and enlightens the reader with wisdom about his personal experiences with his wife as well as experiences of those that have attended his conferences.

As I mentioned, I agree with his interpretation. However, I think the book is too long in that it is repetitive. I profoundly enjoy books that lead from one chapter to the next, and I believe that the author does a wonderful job with the lead-in at the end of every chapter, as well as between sections. But my statement regarding the repetitive nature is valid. While every chapter flows to the next, each chapter seemingly repeats portions of the previous chapters. Personally, I am not a reader that enjoys this style of writing. I get it the first time.

Let me be very explicit here. This is an wonderfully poignant topic, and is a must read by married couples, regardless of whether or not there are issues. I believe the author only has the best interest of married couples at heart!

Enjoy this book!!

September 11, 2009

Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. I did on several occasions pause and reflect on those occurrences throughout the day, and sincerely hope many folks that I know did the same.

However, in listening to talk radio as I often do, a young man who was a Junior in High School at the time talked about one of his memories. He was apparently going to school in NYC. During that day, one of his friends received a phone call from his dad. His dad was trapped in the upper end of one of the towers, and had no way to get out. He was calling his son, as he had the rest of his family, to say his final words. Wow, that gripped me. It really got to me. I was suddenly emotional with the thoughts of "what would I say" if I were in that place?

I spent a good while reflecting on THAT. Frankly, right up to writing this note.

I love my family! i wonder what I would say still. I do think I'd express the happiness that I've experienced with them. I would express the joy I've felt in loving my wife, and loving them, and seeing them grow up as they are. I would express my sadness at some of the things I'd done in the past, and missing out on things in the future. Things like: Growing old with Christie; Walking my girls down the aisle; witnessing them starting families of their own; cuddling with their children (my grandchildren); seeing their children come to a knowledge and acceptance of Christ.

I also thought I might mention the fact that (if possible) I'd watch them from Heaven. I'm not certain that that is scriptural, but it sounded good!

Now, I'm at the point where I believe Christie's been at for a long time...enjoying every millisecond of my life with my family. What does this mean? Does it mean awesome vacations and fun and games? Sure, that and more. Frankly, the day-to-day enjoyment will be more fulfilling in the long term. This I believe strongly. This is where I think my wife and daughters will drive the most memories about me.

I do think that 9/11 is a memory no American should forget. Ever. Is this a patriotic feeling? You bet! But, the bigger feeling is towards family. Does anyone believe that the folks that perished in the towers knew they would? I'm going to step out on a limb and say NO. So I suppose the lesson I'm trying to get myself (and perhaps others to, as well) to realize is that life here on this earth with those we love is nothing short of a gasp of breath. It's short. So, always be on the look-out for moments to cherish both the moment and those you are with.

Real Church - Larry Crabb

My prompting for reading this book involved my daughters, and, to a smaller degree, my wife and me. My daughters are hungry for a place that talks to and feeds them, spiritually. They also need a place to worship and commune with folks of their own age. Therefore, when I saw this book, I felt it would be beneficial. The sub-title also led me in this path, which reads "Does it exist?" and "Can I find it?". So I got the book.

Personally, this was a very hard book for me to read and finish. I put it down numerous times with the the thought being that I would not/could not finish it.

I had a very difficult time getting past the "I don't want to go to church" statement at the beginning of this book. That correctly led me to the conclusion that this book would be another church bashing exercise, and sadly, I was right.

I felt that Larry Crabb spent a lot of time talking down church in general. I felt that the author made too many assumptions on the past iterations of the church. I felt that his impressions of what the church should be was not really documented as it should have been in his writing. His scriptural references were not solid, and were too sparse to be of consequence. For the most part, his references during what could be controversial sections were absent.

I also had difficulty with his parenthetical comments. To me, it was almost as if he should have melded his parenthetical comments with his actual comments to arrive at a better statement. Instead, they were divergent and therefore made the reading more difficult.

Honestly, I feel that that while Satan can influence a church to be quite off with respect to the Bible, I feel that the driving decision point for a person attending or not attending a church (defined in the classic sense: a body of believers meeting as one in a certain location) should be doctrine. Larry Crabb does not teach this.

This book was a complete disappointment and I cannot recommend that anyone read it, especially new believers. It may be only the second book I discard. The other book would be the Book of Mormon.

Christianity in Crisis - Hank Hanegraaf

I was not aware of this particular movement in the Christian realm. The movement in question, and addressed in this book, is the Faith movement. Some of the names mentioned in the book (Copeland, Hinn, Roberts, etc) are all well known if you watch Television evangelism. I am fairly confident that even if you don't watch television news, you are familiar with these names.

Essentially, the Faith movement is synonymous with the “Name it/Claim it” movement. They say that you can get what you want by naming. “Words are power.”

This book is an eye-opening treatise on this philosophy. Hank takes each and every topic and relates it to the scripture as quoted by the Faith proponent, and refutes it. If the Faith proponent is not using scripture, Hank uses the Bible to refute the “traditions of men” as they state it.

Another interesting and very helpful technique that Hank uses liberally in this book is the “Error begets Error” section at the end of most every chapter. This was quite helpful in not only outlining the errors of the closing chapter, but prepares the reader for the next chapter.

Finally, Hank has written this book in a very understandable and readable format. This book is by no means a book with huge words spouting philosophy according to Hank. It is a great work written in layman's terms refuting false doctrine.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone not only wishing to find the fundamental errors in the Faith movement, but also those seeking to bolster their faith and understanding of the scriptures. This book will go a long ways towards helping readers understand their faith and how the scriptures should be interpreted.

National Day of Prayer

A while ago, we had the National Day of Prayer. As one would expect, the distinct population of atheists were dismayed that there even is such a thing. And the Christians were dismayed that President Obama didn't attend any national prayer (non-governmental) events.

To the first grouping (atheists): Get a clue. Regardless of what President Obama declared on his global apology tour, this is a Christian nation and a nation of Christians. Last time I checked, America is still a Democratic Republic in that numbers matter. The majority of folks in this great country are still Christian.

While the atheist group is searching the nooks and crannies of this governments history, they need to realize two things:
1) Regardless of what those that prefer legislation from the Judicial branch (patently illegal), the first amendment does not stipulate that there shall be a separation (or wall) between the church and state with respect to the church's' influence on the state. Rather, this amendment declared that the government shall not declare a state/federal religion or church. The atheists (and the supreme court) have based their decisions on a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist congregation outlining the separation of the church from the state in that the government would not declare their sect (or any others, for that matter) as the official church of the state, which would be a clear violation of the first amendment. The fallacious argument that this country isn't deeply rooted in Judeo-Christian ethics, morals, and beliefs is simply ignorant.

2) They are the minority. This is a democracy. Majorities rule. Unless, of course, you have enough funding to push a decision into the Supreme Court for legislation, which (as previously noted) isn't what is stipulated in the Constitution.

To the second grouping, of which I'm a member (Christians), I feel we're perhaps dismayed for the wrong reason. We certainly cannot judge President Obama against any former presidents (up to and including George Bush) who have been around during this holiday. So far, in this first 100 or so days, President Obama has completely distanced himself from his predecessors as well as the people he theoretically governs. To that end, don't fret that he didn't have anything at the White House. I say this because I believe President Obama is being overly sensitive to the atheistic group by attempting to hold to the false notion that there a separative wall between the government and religion.

However, we as believers should be dismayed because he didn't attend any events off-site of the White House (government directed or otherwise). What does this say when a President self-declares himself as a believer and yet he doesn't demonstrate those beliefs? I realize that one could say that they want to keep their faith private; however, President Obama publicly declares his other, non-religious beliefs (abortion, gay marriage, etc), why should his religious beliefs remain in the dark? I'm not calling for President Obama to be overt about his beliefs. I do, however, believe that he should be willing to demonstrate his beliefs, such as attending the National Day of Prayer functions.

I think what I'm personally leaning towards is that whatever faith President Obama demonstrated or discussed heretofore is pure political rhetoric. In other words, used to garner votes and maintain an overall positive approval rating. Say enough religious sounding words, and one can win enough votes from the religious "crowd" to nullify (but not captivate) said Christian group (or groups) from having impact on ones election or staying elected. How sad is that?

I guess another great topic for another posting is this: Why is it so important to have a man (or woman) of faith in the office of President?

The Shack

I have heard it said that this particular book is "life changing."

Initially, I thought this book was rather harmless in its approach. A family suffers a severe tragedy. While each tragedy is certainly hard to deal with when it's happening to you, it's not a unique occurrence. Not at all. Tragedy happens all the time to folks around the world.

This particular sort of tragedy is something my wife and I have dreaded during the early lives of our children. Now that they are older, our dread has lessened a bit, but now it's replaced by concern over their ongoing lives.

I digress...

I was okay with this book up until late in the chapter called "A Piece of (Pi)," that had the symbol rather than the letters. William Young lost me at that point His description of Jesus being unable to heal people without God's intervention is troubling. We all know that Jesus came to earth as a human. However, it is my belief that He was still God. Wholly God. If he was "just human," like you and me, in order to heal the sick and raise the dead, I believe Jesus would have had to pray prior to the healing and have the prayer answered. I believe that Jesus was God in human form without human limitations. He could have called legions of angels...

I'm a little further in the book now, and while nothing else has jumped out at me as of yet, I'm still stuck on Jesus and the completely human spot he occupies in this book. It's really making me not like this book.

What I'd like, if anyone DOES read this AND has SCRIPTURAL reference that outline his total humanity and lack of personal power, I'm open to being educated. However, at this point, don't read this book. I believe it's teaching (even though it's fictional) false doctrine. NONE of what I've read with respect to the interrelationship between the Trinity matches AT ALL how it's described in the book.

Almost done...I'm still concerned about the aspects of Jesus and His humanity as listed in the book compared to what's in the Bible. You know, I know most of this story takes place in a dream for Mack, but even so, I just can't deal with some of the aforementioned aspects of the story. Also, there's a part where Jesus is talking about folks loving Him from every system (Mormon, Buddhists, Muslims, etc)., and that He has no desire to make them Christians. The author is splitting hairs in that Christ doesn't want to "make" anyone a Christian. Nevertheless, there is only one True God, one True Savior, and one True Holy Ghost. These other religions do not pursue Christ without all the other baggage they have...we don't exist in a "Christ PLUS" world...

Finally finished...

Well, the story line is great: God's ability to lift us from our despair, despondency, etc. The actual story, however, leaves me wanting. I don't like the way the Trinity is portrayed. I especially don't like the way Jesus is "man-ified." Christ was wholly man and wholly God. His miracles were His; God didn't intervene on His behalf.

I just hope and pray that this book doesn't lead folks astray. If you have questions, the Bible is your absolute best reference... Remember, man is fallible and can get it wrong...VERY WRONG.

How do you vote?

How do you vote? No, I'm not asking what sort of machine or paper is used in the process of voting, but rather what guides to your vote?

Personally, my beliefs guide me. I'm a Christian, pure and simple. I use the base of morals that have been instilled in me by the Almighty and His book, the Bible. There's a very short list of validation criteria for my vote regarding candidates:

Does the party this person support issues that I don't support?

Does this individual support issues that I don't support?

If the individual "survives" this extremely short list of questions ,then do they pass the following tests:

Do they have a political history that I can review and deduce their stance on issues not addressed in the campaign?

Do they have a political history that I can review and deduce their stance on issues addressed in the campaign?

Do I feel they're trustworthy?

Are they fiscally responsible?

Do they have a realistic understanding of the real world, or are they ivory tower types?

I simply find it amazing and completely mystifying that folks voted as they did in the last election. I just cannot understand it. Granted, Senator McCain was not the optimal choice. I feel like Mitt Romney would have been a far better choice. Instead, the Republican party decided that the Senator from Arizona with a distinct center-left stance was best.

In talking with folks that voted for President Obama I find that they wanted a change. Or, perhaps that they'd get free college. Or perhaps they'd get something for "free." When pressed on the serious issues of the campaign (war, terrorists, financial issues, etc.), most if not all of these folks give me the deer in the headlights stare. They don't have an answer.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that most Americans base their votes on not much more than the color of the persons clothes and how well they speak. I'd much rather have a strong candidate that believes in "small voice/big stick," than one that can give great speeches to folks and then fall apart under pressure.

On another note, I don't in any way hope that President Obama fails. For him to fail could lead the country to fail. I do pray for him, daily. I pray that he will use wisdom in decision making, and that he will choose the proper course for this country.

Oh for this country to judge folks based upon the content of their character and not the color of their skin. What bliss that would be.

Ponderings

I sat in wonder the other day when I saw reports and video clips of President Obama declaring that he may pursue investigations into the implementation and documentation of torture by certain folks in the Bush administration.

Next, I see a tag line regarding the liberals pushing the Administration to pursue stridently the investigation and (I'm assuming) the prosecution of the Bush Administration on what they call torture.

I won't get into the discussion of what torture is in this particular post...perhaps later.

However, I will say that this pursuit of investigation by this new Administration could potentially set a very bad precedent for follow-on administrations. It could become the norm of new Administrations to delve into all aspects of previous administrations and prosecute them.

Some would say that this is a good thing, and cause administrations to deal forthrightly. I would disagree. Here's why: What is legal now may become illegal in a few years. For example, certain policies and procedures used in the FDR and Truman years (segregation, for example) were considered legal. However, those aspects of Americana are now considered illegal. Should we pursue legal action against the remnants of these administrations (and their kin)? No, of course not.

So, President Obama should drop these statements of investigation and move on to more important issues like winning the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the elimination of oppressive dictatorships in this hemisphere (Venezuela, for example, whom the leader President Obama shook hands), and promote liberty to the world.

It is still way too early to declare that President Obama is either the worst or best president ever; however, it is very hard for me personally to put any faith in his abilities as President when all he seems to be doing is apologizing to the world. For what, I'd like to know.

Honestly, this country, regardless of what the liberal left says, hasn't promoted colonialism in any real sense, and is not responsible for the evil things occuring in the world as we're being led to believe or feel. Frankly, without the shining city on the hill image that is cast around the world, there are literally millions that would perish.

I think the Bush Administration should be hailed as one of the greatest behind Reagan's and Lincoln's.

Think of it: millions upon millions were freed from oppression and murder. The Iraqi's were taken out from under the onus of Hussein. The Afghani's were taken out from under the onus of the Taliban.

Reagan pushed the final pillars of the Soviet empire out and caused its ultimate collapse, freeing hundreds of millions, if not billions.

I don't consider FDR or President Clinton as being in the same league. I just don't. FDR's policies deepened the depression to the point that a war was required to get us out of it. President Clinton's claim to fame as a presidency are a few stains on blue dress and being impeached.

Miss USA

I am perplexed...

Perez Hilton poses a question to Miss California that he knows will elicit an answer to incite angst and discontent. What about? Gay marriage and her belief.

So, when she provides the answer regarding her beliefs, folks get angry and she loses. I have to say that I wonder about these tactics. If she were a lesbian, and a question was raised about her beliefs on Christianity and those comments were felt to cost her the Miss USA title, the judges would be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail as well as the young lady winning being stripped of her title and having it given to the lesbian. Not only that, we would hear the endless detritus from the gay community about the panel being bigoted and biased as well as homophobic.

I would like to say right now that I think this Perez Hilton is immensely bigoted. He is a bigot of the highest order. The method in which his "rights" are foisted upon folks like Miss California and me via the Judicial system rather than how it should be done (as defined by our founding Fathers, via legislation) is immensely unfair and illegal in my opinion.

Ever wonder why this community hasn't pursued a similar measure outside the judicial system? Because it would lose. There's no chance for it to pass. None at all. Regardless of what the President says, this is basically a Christian nation, and morality of this sort wins. Immorality doesn't.

Frankly, I don't know why the radical gay community wants marriage. It seems to me they are so anti-religious that they'd sprint away from marriage. It is essentially a Christian institution. Perhaps they pursue this hateful course because they hate Christians. Again, let's use the English language properly. This is a classic definition of bigotry.

One wonders where this country is headed. We seem to have quite a few folks in political and judicial leadership positions that are promoting a very narrow mindset on the people of this great nation. And, if you don't fit into that mindset, you are essentially emasculated as a human, and cast aside. All sorts of hateful, defamatory, and bigoted slurs are hurled at these folks in an attempt to marginalize and engender fear into them.

Next thing you know, the Homeland Security folks will don new uniforms, and be either impressing the dissenting (read "Moral") community into reeducation camps (Sound familiar?) or stripping them of their nationality and ejecting them from the country. Sounds farfetched, but I believe that this is where America is headed. The slippery slope is being greased heavily by the political radicals in the democratic party.

Rachel's Tears by Beth Nimmo and Darrell Scott

I accepted this book with reservations. Some might ask why I would have reservations with respect to someones experiences at Columbine. Well, it is easy for me to answer that question: Because it scared the living daylights out of me! I have children, and when this happened, I felt that their innocence was marred. I kept imagining myself in these kids parents' place. It made me cry! I still to this day remember Columbine and pray that kids that suffer from the issues that the two murderers had will seek help before they take it out on innocent peers.

But, I went against my reservations about the book, and I am glad I did. While it is essentially written for younger adults, I enjoyed reading it. Right from the first chapter, I was getting tears in my eyes as I read the parents' perspective, and I was gripped by the words they said. As I read, I put myself in their shoes, and it made me cry.

This is a really great book for teenagers to read. If nothing else, I think it would give them insight as to why parents act like they do sometimes. Our reactions to things are primarily driven by our love for our children! I still drop my daughter off at school with a nagging fear that someone will do the same sort of thing at her school. I suppose most parents that know of the Columbine tragedy would feel the same.

By saying this is a great book for teens to read, that does not mean older adults and parents should not read it. You know, this really put words to the absolute adoration I have for my kids! I really think parents would do well to read this book, especially those dealing with tragedy with their children.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about this book were the excerpts from Rachel's own diaries. While this seems to be very personal information, it gives the reader an in-depth look into the heart of Rachel. I really do believe that these writings are very sincere because one never expects folks to read your diary entries; they typically are very private.

Some of the drawings were rather gripping as well. This young lady had a heart for the Lord that was truly amazing. As her parents state many times in the book, she had a relationship with the Lord that was beyond her years.

I would very much recommend this book to folks at any age, starting with the teenage years (because I think it may be a little too much for younger folks). I did enjoy this book, and both my wife and youngest daughter are really wanting to read it!

This is Your Brain on Joy by Dr. Earl Henslin

I can tell you without reservation that I do not read motivational books. I find them mostly boring and a great waste of money. Unless the reader is dedicated enough to follow through with what is recommended, the time spent reading them is a waste and irrecoverable.

With that being said, "This is Your Brain on Joy," by Dr. Earl Henslin is not a motivational book. Not in the least. This is a great book that talks extensively on the brain, and how it works. It was especially educational in explaining the functioning of the brain, and its differing areas in laymen terms. While the author speculates that other professionals in his line of work will most likely chide him (and his book) for the minimal use of the correct professional names. I, for one, sincerely appreciate the simpler words and descriptions!

One of the things that I found to be quite ironic was the fact that psychiatrists and psychologists are two medical professions that do not typically observe the organ that they are treating. I found this to be most interesting and intriguing.

Once the author begins talking about the specific areas of the brain within its own chapter, at the end he provides a listing of supplements, music, aroma's, movies, and prescription medication that can help in resolving issues outlined for the specific area of the brain described.

In addition to these listed helps, the author sprinkles true-life stories that relate to the specific area of the brain. These are not only to the point, they are uplifting in that they demonstrate that the brain, while seemingly mysterious, can be "fixed" to a large degree without surgery or serious medications or even surgery. I can say honestly that I have personally tested some of the things he has outlined, and they indeed work! Specifically, when I'm feeling especially anxious or stirred up, I took some fish oil and ate some sunflower seeds (for dopamine).

Overall, great book. It took me a while because I really wanted to digest it, and lock it in. I know that I will be keeping this book close at hand as I find the advice therein to be very useful!

Fear - A Christian's Perspective

What an interesting word, fear. What do you think of when you see, hear, or read the word? Does a childhood memory spring to mind? Sometimes it does for me. Do you recall a scary movie, or book? I can tell you that scary movies are one of my least favor genre's, for books and movies. Or are you propelled into a litany of mental review pertaining to our daily lives and the goings on in this world? This is what I mostly do, sadly.

In today's instant information age, we all hear of tragedy and terror almost as soon as it occurs. For example, the plane crash in New York last week. I'm thinking I heard about that within 30 minutes of its occurrence. And the Gaza war in the middle east. We hear of death and destruction within moments, which typically includes a body count (women, children, etc). How striking this is to me. I work in the information industry so I have a fairly comprehensive understanding of the digital technology that transports this information, as well as a novices understanding of the capture of the video, sound, and pictures.

Another prime example is any news station at all. Just pick one. They all pander fear, and liberally. We are constantly bombarded with messages that incite fear in us, or can if we let it. Murder, robbery, rape, human bombs, political messages, the list is endless. Blood and death really do sell. And we tend to be happy receivers of fear. Sometimes I think we live for it; can't wait to listen to the message.

What to do? There's the really simple thing such as don't watch the news. Avoid the fear-pandering. However, this isn't always wise in that you kind of lose track of what's happening in the world. The trick is to be able to see and hear the message they're espousing, and process it such that it doesn't engender fear. How do you do that?

That's a good question. Some good natured people seemingly have this stuff run off them like water off a ducks back. But, after constant inundation of this message, they falter and fail. Again one asks: What to do?

Trust. Trust in what? Can we trust in humans? I can tell you that trusting in a fellow human doesn't always work. As a matter of fact, it almost never does. I can count the folks I can trust on one hand, perhaps two, but no more. Humans are weak and fallible. When I say weak, I don't speak of physical muscle strength. I speak of their inherent strength of will. Some would call this stubbornness. Others, a resolute spirit. Some folks have told me that I'm as stubborn as a Missouri mule. I try to stand firm for those I love. Steel spine and all that. But, even the most hardened steel and firm foundation can fail.

Trust? Trust in the Lord. I recently heard a message about living life with worry. This is the sort of thing that fear creates: worry. I'm super guilty of worry. Jesus talks about worry. One of the verses that I recall when worry and fear come knocking is this: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? (NIV, Luke 12:25). If I was able to add an hour to my life by worrying, shoot, I don't think I'd be dying any time soon.

Is this easy? Heavens no! It's monumentally difficult! Why? Because we're human and fallible (there's that phrase again); we're weak; we stumble and trip; we listen to the wrong influence. How can we possibly battle this negativity and sour influence? What can we do?

Trust. Like I mentioned, man I was so much the worrier. Things like financial issues, kid issues, home issues (literally, the house), car issues, stuff like that would just present itself, and off I'd go, sprinting down the path of worry. And the funny thing is, this always happens at a time when I could do absolutely nothing about it! Right in the middle of the night, my eyes would pop open, and I'd be a worrying fool. So I started trying something. I'd pray. I'd pray and say something like "Lord, I can't do a thing about this now. I need my sleep as I'm not yet an eternal being. Take it; it's yours." And then I'd start quoting scripture. I'd start recalling God's word on this matter. Alternatively, I'd get out of bed, go downstairs to my office, grab my Bible, and (this really sounds sophomoric) I'd close my eyes, open the Bible, and put my finger on the Bible. There I'd start reading. Like I said, that Bible pointing sounds childish, but how else are we to approach the throne? I can tell you without wavering that the scripture that I pointed at (entirely with God's direction) worked. It worked. And it works.

Soon, worry is gone, and I'm snoozing again.

But, what if you're not a Christian? There are two, perhaps three paths you can take:

1) Do nothing. Let worry consume your soul.

2) Seek counseling. This can help, but won't yield a long-term resolution. The here and now may be remedied, but there will always be the nagging of fear and worry.

3) Give yourself to Christ. How? How does one do this? Frankly, it's so simple, that many, many religious denominations (and false beliefs) have been created so that man can "work" their way to God. Balderdash! If you will recall a comment that I made previously concerning a "childish" approach, and that this is how we (as Christians) approach the throne, it's absolutely TRUE. Christ has already paid the price. All's one has to do is call on the name of the Lord, and be saved. Simple. This is like an all expense paid trip around the world, at absolutely no cost to you, and you saying, "Well, nah, I gotta go to work in the morning." Thing on THIS when the worry bug comes knocking. Consider Christ... How does one initiate this saving experience? I know you've seen folks in an attitude of prayer if you have been alive for more than a few moments. It's almost like those "clear your mind, and meditate" things. Get quiet...close your eyes...you don't have to, but it may help to be in a kneeling position...bow your head and say something like "Lord, you've paid the price for me. There's nothing I need to do except accept the gift You've already paid for. Lord, I believe you want to be my saviour. I believe You are my Lord and my Savior. I believe you died specifically for me. I want Your gift! I want you! Please come into my life; into me; into my heart. Lord, create me me a new heart! Thank you, Lord!"

Now, if you've prayed that prayer or something akin to it, and were honest and truthful, you're my brother or sister in Christ! Does this mean life is easy? Does this mean life will have no further problems? In a word, nope. It will mean that things could very well get worse. I'm not going to lie to you; I'm going to tell you the truth. What this DOES do for you is give you eternal LIFE (not death), and an eternal FATHER, and an eternal LORD. You have someone to share all your troubles and issues with. You have Jesus! What a wonderful thing!

I know that I'm another blogger, blathering on about this or that, but frankly I've been thinking about this for several days, and I finally did something about it. Will anyone see this message? Who knows. But, God is great, His ways are NOT ours, so when God inclines me to do something, I do it. So, I do this so that He may be glorified. I do this so that if there IS someone out there that these words will touch and help begin the process of fear-release, wonderful. If not, I've done my bit; I've performed the task I felt led to do. God will see to the increase.

Please feel free to notate this Blog with anything you feel inclined to say, good or bad....I may not publish or post it, but you can say what you will....God loves you anyway!

Kiss by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy

Ted and Erin have put together a great Christian novel in Kiss!

I have really become a Ted Dekker fan as his books are very well written, always start with a good "hook," and finish strong. As with all of the Dekker novels I have read thus far, this one starts with a great hook. You are up to your eyeballs in the story right from the start, which is just how I like it! Personally, I prefer a book that starts strong, stays strong, and finishes strong. This is a great example of that technique.

The storyline is very well thought out, with just the right number of supporting cast, and a good collection primary and secondary characters. I very much enjoyed the development of these characters within the story, how they interacted, and the multi-threaded approach to the story which culminates with a vigorous ending having all the diverse threads come together very nicely!

While reading the last third of the book, I couldn't put it down! This is so much the norm for Ted Dekker!

While there's something of a twist in this story (which I won't divulge), it could very well happen in true life. The combination of characters are well thought out, and it is entirely evident that the authors have done their research into the required fields for this book. This story had me guessing who was good and who was bad, and with one exception, I was wrong in my guesses! I

would have no problem suggesting this book to any one of any age. Another great book in the Dekker suite of books!

Enjoy!

For The Tough Times by Max Lucado

I have always enjoyed Max Lucado's books and writings. His message has always been focusing the human condition onto Jesus. While our life swirls, He remains constant. While our faith falters, His grace abounds. While we stumble, He supports.

For The Tough Times is no different. This book is a refresher with respect to how God remains while we may tumble. Personally, I know that my life would be much different without the Lord. Over the last few years, I have had the wonderful experience of watching God work in such wonderful and amazing ways.

While this book is rather short, and small of stature, it contains much to help us as Christians focus our thoughts regardless of our "condition" on God and things eternal. One of my absolute favorite sections is:

"We're thinking, Preserve the body; he's thinking save the soul. We dream of a pay raise, He dreams of raising the dead. We avoid pain and seek peace; God uses pain to bring peace."

As is typical with Max Lucado's books, this one reads very smoothly, and quickly. Shorter chapters lure one to read the next. And, again as is typical, each chapter builds on the previous and provides an inspiring next step.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will recommend it to my friends and family.

Holding Fast by Karen James

"Holding Fast" by Karen James gives us a view into the aftermath of tragedy. I think we all remember the story on the news and in the papers about the three climbers lost on Mount Hood in Oregon in December 2006. But, like most news stories, it came and went. I know that I would have liked to know what happened to the family. I distinctly remember asking myself what the families of the climbers must be feeling. How are they? What are they doing? Are they Christians? How are they coping with this?

For the one climber found (Kelly James), this gives us a window into her reactions, feelings, grief, and how she and her family reacted to the tragedy.

The story starts with a great sense of adventure. We find out that Kelly is an avid, experienced, and daring climber. He had climbed Ranier, Denali, and Alpamayo among others. We also learn that he came from a family that was split apart by dashed hopes. It turns out that Kelly’s dad is a star football player at the University of Houston, and is injured while trying out for the pros. The injury ends his hope of a football career. This turns out to ultimately lead to the wife leaving the husband with the children (4 boys).

The story continues when Kelly and Karen find each other. We find the depth of their love for each other, as well as the love they have for God. There is a wonderful thread of God woven throughout this entire story. We find that not only did Kelly have an avid interest in climbing, but that he also had an avid interest in God, and in climbing he felt closer to God.
As was mentioned, Kelly died on Mount Hood in a snow cave 300 feet from the peak. The other two climbers, also Christians, have never been found. The speculation is that they fell down a crevasse after they left Kelly in the snow cave to seek rescue (Kelly was injured in a fall on an ice climb).

I think the major “story behind the story” was what Karen spent the larger portion of the book on: her dealing and coping with this tragic loss. Here asking the “Why” of God was what I believe all folks would ask in this case. By telling us the whole story of her life with Kelly, the love that they shared with each other, the love they shared with their family, and the love they shared with God, Karen gives us a glimpse of how a Christian can survive tragedy, and how to grow in the Lord.

This was a wonderful book, quite an easy read, and flowed very well. I would recommend it to anyone, believer or not.

In the midst of reading...

I just recently started reading "Holding Fast" by Karen James. At this point (I'm in Chapter 4), I'm very impressed with Karen's writing, and how the story is laid out. It's an addictive read in that you don't want to put it down.
